The Rise of Brownie Points Bakery From Their Viral Duffins at the Summit Farmers Market to New York Times Fame

Updated: May 29

Brownie Points Bakery has become a beloved destination for dessert lovers. This imaginative bakery evolved from a small farmers market stand to garnering praise from prominent publications like The New York Times. In 2007, partners Bob Conway and Peter Lloyd took their first steps at the Summit Farmers Market. With a commercial kitchen in Garwood, they started baking their unique offerings aimed at local customers. Among the treats that soon garnered attention were the now-famous “duffin.” This innovative combination of donuts and muffins quickly became a crowd favorite, marking the bakery's inception.

The duffin took off like wildfire, selling quickly at the Farmers Market in Summit every Sunday and leading to the opening of a storefront on Beechwood Road in 2008. These doughnut-muffin creations come in various flavors, such as lemon, coffee cake, chocolate, raspberry jam, and the original flavor - cinnamon sugar. Over the years, they have sold tens of thousands of duffins annually at the Summit Farmers Market alone.

Building on its success, Brownie Points expanded its menu to feature six core duffin flavors and four rotating special flavors each week. Recently, they introduced the “Duffie,” a mini version of their popular duffins, sold in packs of six.

Bob Conway, the talented pastry chef, received training at the renowned Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) in New York City. He honed his skills for two years at the famed Gramercy Tavern, perfecting techniques that brought a unique flair to the bakery’s offerings.

Peter Lloyd complements Bob's culinary expertise with his retail background. Having served as a buyer for Macy's, his insight into product development and merchandising has played a vital role in the bakery's growth. Together, they form a dynamic partnership that fuels innovation and creativity.

In 2012, Brownie Points made headlines when the New York Times featured the bakery, highlighting its unique treats and community impact. This recognition validated the duo's hard work, drawing in new customers eager to sample their award-winning creations.

Today, Brownie Points Bakery exemplifies what can be achieved through hard work and a commitment to quality. As they continue to innovate and delight the taste buds of their loyal customers, their story reminds us that wonderful things can happen when creativity meets opportunity in baking. For anyone visiting the Summit Farmers Market or their quaint storefront, indulging in a duffin from Brownie Points isn’t just enjoying a sweet treat; it’s savoring part of a remarkable journey.
