Discovering Treasures: The Impact of Atlantic Visiting Nurse's Historic Rummage Sale

Every year, the Far Hills Fairgrounds transforms into a treasure trove for bargain hunters during the Atlantic Visiting Nurse Rummage Sale. This popular event, held twice a year and attracting over 12,000 visitors, not only provides a unique shopping experience but also plays a key role in funding essential home health and hospice care for uninsured individuals.

The Atlantic Visiting Nurse Rummage Sale has a storied history dating back to 1923, making it the oldest sale of its kind in New Jersey. Over the decades, this event has grown into the largest rummage sale in the state, sprawling across two acres at the Far Hills Fairgrounds.

One of the most exciting aspects of the rummage sale is the extensive variety of items available. With over 4,000 cars dropping off donations for each sale, visitors can find everything from vintage clothing to unique collectibles. Past treasures have included a WWII U.S. Navy trunk, signed artworks, silver serving pieces, electric bikes, designer handbags, and exquisite vintage jewelry. The sale is divided into over 25 departments including sporting goods, vintage items, furniture and home goods.

The rummage sale has attracted attention from several famous figures. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis is among those who have donated, underlining the event's importance. Notably, King Hassan II of Morocco once provided his staff with $100 bonuses specifically to purchase warm clothing at the sale, showcasing the charitable spirit surrounding this community event.

Impact on the Community

Each sale brings together more than 400 volunteers who generously offer their time to ensure the event runs smoothly. The funds raised during the rummage sale play a crucial role in supporting Atlantic Visiting Nurse (AVN), which provides essential homecare, hospice, and community health services. In 2024 alone, AVN impacted the lives of over 10,000 individuals, thanks in large part to the generosity of those who participate in the sale.

AVN offers a broad range of services, including skilled nursing, chronic illness management, physical therapy, and caregiver support. A significant highlight is its Hospice Care, which addresses the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of patients through therapies such as reiki, massage, and guided imagery. Furthermore, AVN provides bereavement support to families and loved ones, including special camps for children, ensuring ongoing support even during difficult times.
