Nestled in the beautiful landscape of Hunterdon County, just outside the town of Stockton, Federal Twist Vineyard is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Whether you’re local to the area or visiting, the winery offers a laid-back tasting experience with thoughtful touches, scenic views, and delicious wine—all in a relaxed setting. The outdoor seating is a highlight: a mix of open-air and enclosed areas overlook the Delaware river and a large open field, with space that’s often used for live music. Inside, the tasting room has a rustic but clean-cut feel, complete with sofa seating, a wine barrel room, and floor-to-ceiling windows that keep you connected to the setting outdoors. Open Wednesday through Sunday—with extended hours until 8 PM on Fridays and Saturdays—Federal Twist blends great flavors with stunning views, and an afternoon here might be just what you need.

Wine Flights and Food Pairings

We were served three flights: one white, one red, and a third mixed flight that included rosé. Our favorite by far was “Hey Bett!,” a sweet white wine—smooth, not overly sugary, and easy to drink. We even picked up a few bottles to take home.

We opted for the charcuterie board for two and a hummus platter to complement the wine. Both were outstanding, but the hummus platter was particularly remarkable. Uniquely, the hummus was topped with finely chopped feta, black olives, cucumbers, and tomatoes. The toppings stayed in place, making it easy to scoop with pita—no extra utensils or finger work were needed.

Behind-the-Scenes Access

The staff was attentive without being intrusive. They walked us through the wine selections and offered insight into the aging process. At one point, we got a quick look at the barrels where the wine is aged, which added a nice layer of context to the tasting. The team seemed genuinely invested in making sure everyone had a good experience, even on a windy day.

Walking the Grounds

After our tasting, we took our glasses and wandered through the vineyard section. The area is quiet with just enough movement—birds, a light breeze, the occasional passing car—to keep it feeling alive without being distracting.

One notable detail: the bathrooms were spotless. Leading up to them is a hallway lined with family photos. Federal Twist is family-owned, and this hallway makes that clear without saying a word. It’s a small touch, but it gives the space personality. Outside we saw wine slushies offered, too, which we didn’t try–but noted for next time.

Before we left, we stopped to check out the Federal Inn, located just around the corner from the main property. A completely restored 19th century, 5 bedroom farmhouse situated on 77 acres of private, untouched land. The house is charming with modern and luxurious amenities, full of character, and feels like the kind of place you could easily spend a whole day, or even a weekend… and you can! A room at The Federal Inn is available to book through Airbnb or VRBO

Final Takeaway

Federal Twist Vineyard provides more than just a tasting experience—it's a well-structured, laid-back venue where the wine is truly excellent, the food is thoughtfully crafted, and the ambiance encourages you to linger a bit longer. Reservations are not required, and both children and pets (outside) are welcome. Feel free to bring your bike and pedal to the vineyard from nearby river towns, spending the day exploring the charming river valley.
