Welcome to the Village in Jersey City

Follow @Welcometothevillagejc for news and history of our beloved section of Jersey City

The Village is one of Jersey City’s most charming and creative neighborhoods—a mix of historic row houses and indie shops. Once a bustling hub of merchants and open-air markets, its roots run deep in community and craftsmanship. In the 1970s, a walking guide was created to celebrate its unique character—a tradition we continue today as business owners and authors of this guide. Blending old-world charm with modern creativity, The Village remains a place where connection and community truly feel like home. We hope you enjoy exploring it as much as we do.

New Jersey’s Nerdiest Neighborhood Might Be In Jersey City. People began calling a few streets in that section of downtown Jersey City — away from the pricier waterfront — “Nerd Alley.” Perhaps it was the price, perhaps it was the location, but niche shops proliferated. A stroll down Second Street—the prettiest street in the Village of Jersey City—feels like walking through a quiet ribbon of charm tucked between the city’s bustle. The old brick facades and close-knit stoops still carry the warmth of generations who made this neighborhood their home. Historically, the Village was once known as Jersey City’s “Little Italy,” shaped by Italian immigrants who settled there in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and fostered a vibrant community of shops, churches, and traditions. Settle into the European Charm of @callmemiajc located on this dreamy block, and savor a latte crafted with espresso drawn from an Italian Victoria Arduino lever machine. At Call Me Mia, every shot is pulled by hand —and every cup carries a touch of history.

End the day at the historic @casacolombocc — home to art exhibits, cultural events + the heart of Italian-American heritage in the Village. And take in a show and dance the night away at @whiteeaglehalljc a newly restored and renovated historic theater

Tiny footprint, big creativity — this neighborhood, known as THE VILLAGE hums with indie energy, and is perfect for a day of holiday shopping and festive experiences. Check out our list of hidden gems and let us know if we missed any of your favs.
